What is dyspraxia/Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)?

  • Dyspraxia/DCD is a Neurological Neurodevelopmental Condition that primary affects co-ordination and spatial awareness which persists throughout ones life from birth.

What are the signs and symptoms of dyspraxia/DCD?

  • Difficulty with coordination, poor fine motor skills, speech apraxia and spatial awareness trouble. Such as: Throwing and catching issues, "immature" vocabulary/doesn't say complicated words, may appear intoxicated when sober etc.

Is dyspraxia the same as DCD?

  • Yes, Dyspraxia is the original term that is mostly preferred by the dyspraxia community. Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is the official clinical term used for dyspraxia within research and diagnostic manuals such as the DSM-5. Both terms are interchangeable and do not have different meanings.

How common is dyspraxia/DCD?

  • Dyspraxia/DCD affects approximately 5% to 10% of the population, making it one of the most common neurodivergent conditions. For example, Autism affects approximately 1% of the population and 5% of the population for ADHD.

How is dyspraxia/DCD diagnosed?

  • Dyspraxia/DCD assessments are most commonly done by occupational therapists above the age of 4-5. However This various depending on location as who should perform these assessments has been controversial among healthcare practitioners. 

Can adults have dyspraxia/DCD, or is it only diagnosed in children?

  • Dyspraxia/DCD is a lifelong condition and is not something children grow out of.

What causes dyspraxia/DCD?

  • There is no known cause for dyspraxia/DCD and is thought to be Hereditary, however may not present in all family members.

How can I support someone with dyspraxia/DCD?

  • Offer practical suggestions for supporting a person with dyspraxia, including understanding and patience, as well as resources or support groups.

What is the treatment for dyspraxia/DCD?

  • Explain that while there is no cure, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and sometimes speech therapy can help manage symptoms.

Is dyspraxia/DCD a form of autism?

  • No, autism is a separate condition entirely. It is worth nothing however that there is an 80% comorbidity of Dyspraxia/DCD and Autism. Due to lack of Dyspraxia Awareness this is what has caused many to assume dyspraxia symptoms are part of Autism, this is not the case.

Is dyspraxia/DCD Dyslexia with numbers?

  • No, dyspraxia/DCD is not dyslexia with numbers. Dyspraxia is a primarily  coordination and spatial awareness affected disability.

Is dyspraxia/DCD a disability?

  • Yes, under the Disability Act 2010 Dyspraxia/DCD is protected as a disability giving you protected rights in areas such as the workplace and in the general public.
